STRATEGY OF TEACHING IN THE TECHNICAL COLLEGES AND VOCATIONAL CENTRES
The methodology used in the Technical Colleges and Vocational Centres include:
SKILL ACQUISITION CENTRES
Demonstration, method of Teaching is mainly used in the Vocational Centres. These methods give room for 80% practical and 20% theory. In the practical stage, Students are presented with a topic and the subject to be dealt with in order to observe, dismantle and assemble the products of the subject matter. Students are instructed to carryout practical activities based on the Instructor’s activity. This allows the trainees to learn by doing. Assignments are given to trainees to carry out base on the practical exposure by the Instructor. These processes allow every trainee to participate in the class.
TECHNICAL COLLEGES
The methodology used for teaching in the Technical Colleges include:
The ratio of practical work to theory is 60: 40.This is because the Students are prepared for practical skill acquisition as well as developing their ability for cognitive framework for higher education as the case may be.
Currently, DSTVEB adopt the Ministry of Labour & Productivity curriculum for Trade Test and harmonized curriculum review by DSTVEB for the Vocational Centres in-line with NABTEB Modular curriculum as the case may be for the Vocational Centres. The Segmented/on the spot practical method are use to sieve those with pre-skill background qualification from those without the basic skills of the trade they enrolled in. this encourage peer group learning and better assimilation by the trainee
CURRICULUM USED IN THE TECHNICAL COLLEGES
The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE)/City and Guide curriculum are being used by the Technical Colleges while National Business and Technical Examination Board does the certification. More also, a modular NABTEB certificate, Trade Test certificate from Ministry of Labour and productivity and City and Guilds are equally been issued to graduate trainee on short term courses.
CERTIFICATION
Certificates awarded at the Vocational Centres are NABTEB modular Certificate for those who can write while Trade Test Certificate for practical proficiency by the Ministry Labour & Productivity (Trade Test, City and Guilds) and Certificate of attendance by DSTVEB. This is to provide a unified standard of certification for graduate trainees. Students are also engage in three (3) months Students’ Industrial Work Experience (SIWES) where they can be evaluated and improve on their skills , Entrepreneurial development is equally thought to enable the trainee develop skills in establishing their own business and be self reliant.
